Space Traveler Shares Depression In the Wake of Wave of Backlash After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also carried well-known figures.

The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, recalling a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the journey.

She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and performed experiments during the mission, said every professional achievement – including her scientific research and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her background – was drowned out under the tide of gendered attacks.

She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of survivors of assault.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

A Path to Recovery

Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose kindness were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she said.

She added that even with the backlash, important benefits had emerged from the experience, including elevated attention for her scientific work and platforms for her activism.

About the Mission

The self-operating New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a brief suborbital flight that passed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.

The diverse crew also comprised accomplished professionals from different industries.

The enterprise behind the mission is a private space firm founded by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
