The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.
Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job
The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.
Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves
The Fed typically studies BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the number of new jobs created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.
The number of positions added to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown
Though BLS was set to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
